Where Does Moringa Seed Oil Come From?
Moringa seed oil is extracted by cold-pressing the seeds of Moringa oleifera, also called the “miracle tree,” for its many health benefits and uses. You can use everything from the tree – including seed, bark, leaves, and oil, making it a cost-effective and highly sustainable plant. Moringa seed oil is often called Ben oil, because it has about 9% behenic acid by weight, which is actually pretty high for a seed.
The tree grows long pods that can be up to a foot length, and the seeds have an outer hull protecting an inner seed kernal. This seed kernal contains about 40% oil by weight, and can be processed different ways to extract the oil. We prefer cold-pressing, because it helps the oil retain its nutritional and structural properties. However, cold-pressing also extracts the least amount of oil, so some manufacturers will heat the seeds or add solvents to produce more oil.
According to A Healthy Leaf, it takes about 500 moringa seeds, or 35 mature seed pods, to produce 1 oz of cold pressed oil. That is why high quality moringa seed oil can be as much as $10 / oz. What is Moringa Seed Oil Composition ?
* About 72% of it is oleic acid, an Omega-9 fatty acid, making it a great for brain, heart, and overall health. Olive oil is also high in Omega-9, which is why it can be used to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and many other health benefits. Dr. Axe found in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that the use of oleic acid showed increased energy, increased physical activity and even less anger.
* It is high in Vitamin E which is a strong antioxidant that prevents free radical damage both internally and also used topically on the skin.
* Cold-pressed moringa seed oil contains many phytosterols, which are found in the membranes of plants. Phytosterols have been shown to reduce blood pressure by 9-17% in statin users.
